How to Make the Most of The Bad Days

blog mindset Sep 27, 2023

Bet you didn't expect that title this week.

I met a friend for lunch the other day and she asked me how it was going and instead of the typical "fine" that most of us give, I said, "I almost just burned the whole thing down." She looked at me like, girl, you're crazy, you are just having a bad day, but honestly, the last month was more than just a bad day. Everything felt hard.

I wanted to share that because it is honestly not always butterflies and rainbows over here but I am such a structured, planned person and personality. Everyone always thinks I have It together, which 90% of the time I do. I am the show-up early, have it done 24 hours in advance, practice beforehand kind of gal. I always have been.

But this last month I lost my mojo.

So what do you do? Well, I share quite a bit that when this happens it is often time because I am overscheduled. So my first question is where is your time going?

I have pretty strict rules about what I do and how I do it, but this summer I broke them all. I normally don't schedule meetings on Mondays and Fridays and all of a sudden I was. I normally don't work past 7 pm and all of a sudden I was. I normally spend time doing yoga and lifting weights and all of a sudden I wasn't. I had let a lot of bad habits creep back in for whatever reason and broken all the boundaries I had set.

What to Do When You are Feeling Unmotivated

When I am feeling overwhelmed or unmotivated, the first thing I do is dig into my calendar. So I did that. And fixed it.

The second thing I did was surround myself with positivity and people that brought me joy. I want to be surrounded by friends who lift me, clients who want to work hard and be part of a partnership, and honestly family who is supportive. So I changed my surroundings. I was more cautious about what clients I brought on and when. I scheduled specific activities with my girls so we could bond on a closer level. While I am still working through it, I started going to therapy more AND spending more time with my thoughts.

Funny thing, and maybe you can relate, but I actually use work as a coping mechanism. When I was in corporate for so long, work made me feel like I was worthwhile. Like I was productive. Like I was valued. And it has taken a LONG time to unravel that.

You don't have to work more to justify yourself as a good human.

If you are having a down day, I would look at: who are you surrounded by? Are they supporting you? Are you hiding in the busy to just feel like you are making progress?

And the last thing I did was acknowledge my feelings. Why was I feeling burnt out? Why wasn't I motivated about things that I usually was? And that is honestly where I saw the biggest shift. We paused a few launches and instead are doing things that feel more fun this fall. I went all in on our mastermind retreat opening it up to my 1:1 clients and mastermind members because it felt right. And honestly, anytime you have a budget for pumpkins, that feels super aligned. It brought the spark back. Because I was serving those who wanted to be helped and not forcing it.

Have you given yourself a minute to sit with your feelings?

Maybe you caught the vibe over the last few weeks, but it feels lighter and more fun. We are hosting our retreat this weekend and it is honestly like my dream come true. Being able to open our house to clients who fly across the country still blows my mind. And I literally bend over backward to spoil them this weekend. That feels good.

I am doing some fun collaborations coming in the next few weeks that have brand new opportunities for you.

That feels good.

Serving feels good.
Having a schedule that is aligned feels good.
Slowing down to feel your feelings feels good.
Not burning it all down when you have a bad day feels good.

Remember, you have to have the mindset of a gladiator as an entrepreneur. So maybe let's just normalize bad days or bad months. It is OK and you will come back stronger. They say the comeback is better than the setback, right?

Just a little behind the scenes this week of the real-life ups and downs. Have you experienced this before? How did you handle it?
