I didn't plan on sharing this, but funny things happen when you host or attend LIVE events. You get REALLY inspired. It has happened every time I have gotten in a room with any sort of leader or women's group, even in my corporate career. One of the exercises we did on the first day of our event was to really think about why you are doing what you doing.
What is Your Why?
Have you slowed down enough lately to ask yourself why you are reading this blog? Or what your true intention is for your business? Why are you setting your alarm at 5:30 a.m. to write content? Or create that course?
If you don’t know where you are going, any road will take you there. Many entrepreneurs and CEOs tend to forget the importance of setting a vision and sometimes, the daily grind gets in the way, and being the keeper of the vision doesn’t stay on the priority list. Maybe you can relate?
Vision vs Mission
Here's an easy definition according to Forbes: The Vision is the What, Where, or Who you want the company to become. The Mission is the WHY the company exists, it is your purpose, passion, or cause.
Here are a few you might recognize:
- Disney: To entertain, inform, and inspire people around the globe through the power of unparalleled storytelling.
- Bringing the best user experience to customers through innovative hardware, software, and services.
And while we are no Disney over here at Crush the Rush Headquarters, having a solid mission statement behind the scenes made everything else so much clearer. What products to create, what content to share, how to share it, what blogs to write, etc. It is our guiding principle for everything.
Our Current Mission Statement
Our current mission statement is to "Help 100 women leave corporate and design their dream job". If you have followed me for a while I usually say I help you build a full-time business on a part-time schedule through simple strategy, which is still true. But when our mission of changing 100 families' lives and helping them create a legacy with a schedule and an impact that serves them best came to fruition, it was like the clouds parted (being serious) and I knew exactly what to share and how to share it.
The impact? Well truly behind the scenes our products and services haven't changed, but the words we are using to speak to you and our ideal clients shifted a bit. Are you in your 30's or 40's? Do you want to leave your corporate job? Or design a dream schedule for your family?
Those words resonate. And are powerful.
Creating Your Own Powerful Mission
I am sharing this because you don't have to start over to create a powerful mission. You have to really niche down and think about who you want to serve and the impact you want to have.
To come up with our mission, we used the
Storybrand framework. Start by asking yourself these questions. (i.e., this is the point in the blog where you want to take notes)
- Look at your current status. Why are you here? And what do you really want?
- What do you want to accomplish in one year? Be specific.
- Why are these goals important? Impactful?
Then you can brainstorm your mission.
What are key characteristics that make up your company, ideal client, product, etc? For me, it would be community, trust, loyalty, etc. These are really important to help you niche down and figure out the impact of the mission statement.
Next, think about the critical actions you can take. As an example, I want to help 100 women. Because 100 seems enormous but also can make a HUGE impact. And create a legacy.
When you look back at all your notes, your mission should start to become clear. And now you have a guiding principle for why you are reading this, why you are creating the content you are, and why you want to create epic products and services.
Better yet, mission-driven companies are 54% more likely to stay in business longer than five years. When the odds are stacked against you as a solopreneur, this seems like an exercise worth doing. Am I right?
I'd love to hear yours. What is your mission for 2024? What impact are you going to make?
