I always get this question…How do I get started? Or, I’d love to get started but I just don’t have the motivation. So I thought I would share my story. I hope it helps! Can you relate? Hit reply and let me know what helped you the most! Or better yet, what you would like to see more of? I am an open book!
First, this is how I got started almost 4 years ago. How I changed my routine and my body after twins. As a new mom with no energy and no motivation except that I KNEW I needed to make a change and this how I did it.
With that said however, my girls are 5 now, not newborns. So that story has continued on. And so has my journey.
How do you get motivated and then stay motivated to make it a lifestyle change? How do you find the energy to fit it in?
I personally am a huge sugar addict. Everything I worry about I could eat my feelings through sugar. And I love chocolate. Food, anything sweet, makes me feel special. And happy. 🙂 When stress comes along, so does the chocolate and its a spiral from there. So the #1 thing I had to change after changing my routine, was my nutrition. And that has been the game changer in my consistency!
And yes, I am going to tell you exactly what I have done…
1) Get strict.
I am all about balance and wine but in order to get on track, you need to get strict. For me, that means those Trader Joes dark chocolate bars CANNOT be in the house. And neither can the ice cream or any other trigger foods. I then plan out EXACTLY what I am going to eat for each meal for one full week. As in Monday thru Friday at work and then Saturday and Sunday. If I am eating out, I write it down. And what I can order. If I am packing my lunch, I make a plan for what to pack. Planning is 110% the best place to start, but you have to remove the emotional triggers. My goal is one day at a time, but to be 100% for one week. That usually gets me right back on track.
2) Grab an accountability partner.
For some reason, women will do whatever it takes to NOT let someone else down. BUT when it comes to ourselves, we often let ourselves down without even thinking! So as humans, we crave accountability. Get thee a coach + a running partner + a personal trainer…just someone who will call you out when you need it and cheer you on as you show up! Do this for not only your workouts, but your nutrition and heck, your goals! Tell someone! Your husband, your best friend. Your coach.
3) Get something NEW!
I don’t know about you but I love NEW things. Or want to try all the “new” trends. So when you trying to make a healthy change, make it exciting. Grab a new meal plan. Try carb cycling. Go vegetarian for a day. Try a new cookbook from the library. Teach your kids to make healthy banana nut muffins! Guys, this can be fun. If you want to make it a lifestyle change, you have to make it something you enjoy.
4) Reward yourself.
Personally, I am motivated my clothes and shopping. And recently by feeling more confident in my clothes, specifically jeans. They don’t feel like they are sticking to me anymore. And I can actually breathe! So I try to set a goal for myself and then celebrate that in small ways. Maybe its that new cookbook above. Or maybe it’s as extreme as a new spring wardrobe. Whatever it is, pick something that makes you excited.
You might be surprised to read this, but I would actually tell you to skip a workout and sleep and stick to your nutrition than to get up at 5am, drag yourself through the day and then lost all willpower and eat a bag of chips at 9pm because you are exhausted. When are are rested, you have SO much better decision making power than when you aren’t. So step away from the crazy and get some shut eye!
If you’d like to know more specifics including the meal plans I follow and what my routine looks like. Let’s chat. No commitment, just a chat. I’d love to hear from you and share more!
Make a plan and let’s do it!
